My 2015 List of Recommended CS/IT Programs Outside the IIT System

JEE Mains is over for a majority of students who gave the offline version, and long before the result (which will take three months for including the weight of board marks), a lot of people are already discussing their options. I had written two blogs in 2011, one for deciding which program to opt for in which IIT and the other one mentioned a small list of institutes outside the IIT system which are good and which have something unique about them. The two blogs are in the top few in terms of readership of all the blogs that I have written in the last five years of my blogging life. But some of the information in those two blogs has become outdated and I thought I will write a bit about the non-IIT places which have strong IT/CSE programs.

It is much easier for me to write about these programs now than it was in 2011. The reason is that I haven't traveled to most of the departments that are perceived as good for many years, and as I wrote in my blog in 2011, I wouldn't want to include any institute unless I have good information about it. So, my list is going to be rather small this year. It has three institutes from the older list:
  1. International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad
  2. Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, Delhi
  3. Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani
I had mentioned in 2011 that IIIT Hyderabad is the best institute for IT education outside the older IITs, and that IIIT Delhi was a brand new institute that had come up really fast within a short 3-year period then. Now, four years later, my impression is that IIIT Delhi has grown in quality so much that it can be compared with IIIT Hyderabad. IIIT-H continues to do well, continues to attract good faculty and top students from JEE. They continue to have a great crop of research students. IIIT-D, on the other hand, suffers from lack of brand recall amongst the students and parents. However, a look at their website will tell you that they have built a truly great institute. The faculty quality is awesome. The research output is great. The curriculum has all the right ingredients with a good bit of flexibility. The brand new campus infrastructure is excellent. And given all this (and good placements too, though I personally do not really want to compare those numbers), I think it is only fair to say that they have caught up with IIIT Hyderabad.

Indeed, I am so impressed with the growth of IIIT Delhi, I have decided to join the faculty of IIIT Delhi from the next academic session. (Here you go, take everything I say on this blog with a pinch of salt. I am totally sold on IIIT Delhi. That could also mean that I may have some biases.) I will write a separate blog article on what all is great about IIIT Delhi some time in near future.

BITS Pilani is a place that I admire a lot. Every time I go there, I learn something new about how to be student friendly. I admire their flexibility, particularly their dual-degree programs, their admission process (BITSAT is any day better than JEE), and so on. One of their strengths is the diversity of people on the campus. It is not an IT focused institute, and has a large number of departments. The interaction with people from different disciplines can only help the students. Of course, they have a fantastic brand name and a very active and helpful alumni group, which is a huge plus for anyone joining BITS. But purely in terms of their IT/CSE strengths, I would rate them after the two IIITs. (You, the student, should be able to combine the pluses and minuses and decide the relative ranking for yourself. Everyone's mileage will vary.)

Now the newcomers. I have only one to add. And surprisingly, it is not an engineering college. It is a new university, which prides itself in being one of the finest universities for liberal arts education. Yes, I am talking about Ashoka University. It started just a few months ago, and the first under-graduate batch is in its second semester. They have several majors from humanities and social sciences, but they also offer a major in Computer Science. Of course, it is a three year program as of now, and not a BTech degree. So it is perhaps not a good fit on this page. Also, they have not been able to hire many faculty members. So there are issues. However, considering the quality of people whom they have recruited in different disciplines, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that we are seeing emergence of a truly world class university. The quality of students they have attracted in the very first batch is fantastic. The infrastructure they are building is great. The best part of the program is that you get a very liberal education. All under-graduate programs are supposed to be broad based, and in any engineering college when you do a degree in Computer Science, you will be exposed to other engineering disciplines, other science subjects, some humanities and so on. Ashoka too will give you a broad based education, but those non-CS courses would be mostly from liberal arts and may be a few from science, and I think this kind of broad education will be really useful and interesting for a whole lot of students.

Let me comment about some other institutes as well. While I have not visited DAIICT for many years (surprising since I have been to Ahmedabad dozens of time in this period, and I have many friends in DAIICT), I am told that the faculty student ratio has declined a bit in the last 4 years, but not to any worrisome degree. A few older stalwarts have retired, but the new faculty is continued to be recruited carefully. A real big problem is that there is tuition control by the state government, which means that the resources at its disposal are less than what they used to have, or what other similar institutions have. The admission is also regulated by the state government. They also had a change of leadership recently. We will need to see how it pans out for them. But overall, I am confident (even without a visit) that it remains a good place for IT education. If I visit them before the admission season, I will add more comments here.

IIIT Allahabad used to have a serious leadership issue. They now have a new leader (since last one year). I hope things are improving there.

Prof. I K Bhat moved from NIT Hamirpur to NIT Jaipur. And there have been several improvements in the department. My ranking for NIT Jaipur has improved as a result, though I wouldn't put them in the same category as the first three places.

I may add more information in the coming weeks.

Perhaps there may be other places you may find mentioning outside I(n) T or NIT system. Krithi Ramamritham had once undertaken a tour of CS institutes in our country but was published in IEEE Computer in 1995. Maybe about time to come up with another survey.

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Atul, I had done a tour for a whole semester in 2006 and continued to visit many places occasionally in 2007-2008. The insights gained from those trips were what was used for writing my 2011 article. Yes, there is a need for someone to do a similar tour across the country. Who will sponsor it?

Thanks sir for this information at this right time. You didn't commented on LNMIIT's state this time. Also I was expecting some insight on IIIT Bangalore plus some updates on Goa and Hyderabad campuses as you didn't recommended them in previous article. It would be really helpful for guiding students if you can share your info and thought on them as well.It was really heartening to read that you have talked about NIT Jaipur, Being an alumnus it feels proud on reading such comments about our alma matter. From my interaction with our professors there I had received a similar feedback, Prof I.K. Bhat really is a visionary.

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Siddharth, I haven't visited IIIT Bangalore ever since they started their under-graduate program. Pilani campus continues to be the flagship campus of BITS, though I am noticing significant effort in bringing other campuses up to the same level. I would not like to comment on LNMIIT.

Staff said...

Thank you sir for the detailed input. However, wouldn't it be unwise to choose Ashoka University, given that its liberal arts program (although great in itself) is not suitable for graduates looking for jobs in India?

Kishore said...

The IIIT Bangalore program is a 5 year Integrated MTech Program in CS/IT. They don't offer any UG programs.

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Sahil, first I am talking about CS program of Ashoka University and not their liberal arts programs. Two, I am very confident that graduates of Ashoka university even in liberal arts programs will have a fantastic career ahead.

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Kishore, By under-graduate program I mean programs after 12th class. A 5-year Integrated program is an integration of UG and PG program.

hello sir
amazing article I must say.
I see that people on this blog are talking only about IITs and NITs but could you also suggest about some private colleges or your views on Amity Noida, Manipal Jaipur, GD goenka and any other private institute in your knowledge.
Regards

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Prakhar, I am afraid I don't know enough about them.

Unknown said...

Sir-Can you Rank and advise relative Grading of DTU,NSIT, NITK,NITW,NITT,MNNIT for CS Course?

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Peeyush, I don't want to comment on them. But, in general, the issue about choosing a place over the other is very simple. I am advocating that you give maximum weight to faculty quality (which is difficult for a layman, but not so difficult otherwise, and most importantly, the information is available fairly reliably), while the "popular" method is to seek out information on "placement" or "scope" which is not available reliably, and in any case has much smaller prediction value of what will happen 4-5 years from now.

u are right sir

Sir I am planning to take admission in LNMIIT.It would be very kind of you if you can advise me on that matter.

Hello sir,
I need your advise for for Mtech CSE. what do you say about IIIT Bangalore. It has very good faculty profile, but should I chose it over NIT Trichy even though IIITB has low visibility.
Regards,

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@haroon, I would recommend a better faculty profile over branding.

sir, whats ur comment about the cs department of ISM dhanbad..

Unknown said...

Sir if you can tell me which campus of bits out of goa or Hyderabad is better for cse department

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Rohit, It has been a decade since I went to ISM. But based on what I remember and what I hear, I would think that IIIT Hyderabad, IIIT Delhi and BITS Pilani are better departments.

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Poonam, as I have said in one of the responses to comments, Pilani campus continues to be their flagship campus, but there have been significant improvements in the other campuses over the last few years.

Aditya said...

Sir IIIT Delhi has almost 85% seats reserved for Delhi candidates , does this not hinder the quality of students and development rate of the institute as compared to IIIT hyderabad (which has no reservation policy) ?

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Aditya, In general, having 85% reservation based on a small geographical location should lead to poor selections and less diversity in the class. However, what we find is that Delhi is a very cosmopolitan city and hence people from very diverse backgrounds live here, which is reflected in our student population. Also, Delhi has a very large number of excellent students, and therefore, our closing rank is not too bad, and is improving every year. But I would agree that IIIT Hyderabad has an edge in this particular dimension.

Sir, My son has been allotted ECE at MIT Manipal and he is also interested in NSIT and IIIT Delhi. Do you recommend NSIT or IIIT Delhi for ECE program.

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Poorani, I would strongly recommend IIIT Delhi even for ECE.

currently in the first list i have been allotted chemical @ pilani campus

what would you suggest me to take .
waiting for your reply

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Anirudh, if you see and previous years' blogs, I have been consistently stating that for CS, one should look at IIITH, IIITD and BITS Pilani. You will certainly get IIITD Computer Science at 2972 rank. That is a great institute and amongst the best CS programs in the country.

Anirudh garg said...

sir i have no branch preference
so according to that would bits be the best institution .

based on reputation is bits better than IIIT-D ??

Unknown said...

Sir,would you like to comment something about DAIICT-Gandhinagar. Among NIT Jamshedpur CS, NIT Kurukshetra IT, BIT Mesra IT and Daiict ICT which one would you recommend?

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Aniruddh, BITS is a very old institute and of course, it is a good institute, and I have always been including BITS CS @Pilani campus in my recommended list. It obviously has a great reputation, and all that. However, if you look at the faculty profile of IIIT Delhi and that of BITS (any campus, including their flagship Pilani campus), you would find IIIT Delhi significantly ahead on this particular count. My own bias as a faculty member is that faculty is the most important factor in quality of education, and hence I recommend IIIT Delhi ahead of BITS Pilani. But there are obvious strengths in BITS, and it is upto you how much weight you want to give to other factors like brand value versus the quality of faculty.

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Kriti, I am not well versed with all the Institutes. I can say based on my knowledge of DAIICT that it is a good institute, and whatever little I have been able to check with other NIT websites, they seem to have been able to attract more faculty with better profile. And I as a faculty member have this bias that faculty is the most important resource. And hence based on this alone, I would recommend DAIICT. But if you have other information, and you think those things are more important, then you can modulate your decision accordingly.

Unknown said...

Sir I have 3330 rank in jee advanced and 8755 rank in jee main.I am getting electrical engineering in IIT Ropar and CSE at IIIT delhi.Which course should I go for. What are the chances of upgradation of branch if I go for IIT ropar.

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Shubham, This really depends on your interest. If you are keen on CSE, then of course, you have to join IIIT Delhi. If you are not too keen on CSE, then you can be in IIT Ropar.

Unknown said...

Hi Dheeraj, after a long research, I could find a good blog on admissions by you. My son has been allotted ECE in IIIT Allahabad and is willing for NSIT & IIIT-D too for the same branch. Its really confusing to decide after so much about all the three. Can you help?

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Dharmesh, I am a teacher, and my bias is in favor of a place with the best faculty. There can be no comparison with IIIT Delhi.

Unknown said...

Sir, please advise me, should I choose IIIT Bangalore ECE (5 year integrated MTech, and it's a new branch) or NSIT ICE (4 year undergraduate course). Which one would you recommend?

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Anshi, Just check out the faculty of the two places. As I have been repeatedly saying, my bias is strongly in favor of people of my tribe. IIIT Bangalore has been more successful in attracting faculty.

Aditya said...

Sir, please advise me, which undergraduate should I choose IT at IIIT Allahabad or COE at NSIT ? (I am interested in doing MS after graduation )

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Aditya, same advice as before to everyone. Check out the faculty profile of the two institutes in Computer Science and IT areas. In going through the two sites, I get a feel that IIIT Allahabad has been more successful in attracting quality faculty.

Samujjal said...

Sir,

My Jee Main rank is 3113 and BITSAT score is 334. I have been allotted CS in Mnit Allahabd and Msc Eco dual degree course in BITS pilani campus which has a chance of upgration to CS BITS Hyderabad campus in spot round. I fall under outside Delhi category and my chance of getting into IIIT D is less and at best I can get SE in DTU. I am interested in pursuing computer science. I am confused and not able to take a final decision. Pls suggest which option I should select.

Anonymous said...

Sir i have got computer science in IIT Ropar as well as NSIT .i am confused which one to opt for.i would be obliged if you can guide.
Thank you

Rajat said...

Sir,

My jee mains rank is 3113 and BITSAT score is 334. I came under outside delhi quota and will not be able to get CS in IIIT D and may get SE in DTU. I have got admission in CSE in MNNIT Allahabad and Msc eco dual degreee in BITS pilani campus which may be upgraded to CS in BITS Hyderabad campus in sport round. Pls suggest the best option.

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Rajat, Between MNIT Allahabad and BITS Hyderabad, it is a difficult choice. BITS Hyderabad has been improving every year. The faculty recruitment is more research oriented. BITS as a whole is becoming research oriented. And it has always been a very student friendly place. But MNIT Allahabad also has a very decent faculty, and they have been doing well academically over the last couple of decades. Today, I might just prefer MNIT Allahabad but when you graduate 4 years from now, the situation could potentially be different.

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Shivam, IIT Ropar was doing quite well in CS faculty recruitment. I have not tried to learn about them in recent past. But with my pro-IIT bias, I would tend to favor them.

Vaibhav Bansal said...

I really appreciate your blog sir and it is a commendable effort.Sir, I am confused between DTU Software Engineering and BITS Pilani M.Sc Mathematics and I prefer both the branches given that BITS has lots of flexibility later on to choose your discipline.Having said that how do you compare BITS PILANI and DTU ? Whcih would be a better option and why?

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Vaibhav, if you are interested in a specific discipline then the choice should be based on that. (Software Engineering versus Mathematics). But if that is not so important, then BITS offers a huge flexibility, and I am quite excited about BITS, in general.

Biplab said...

I am very much impressed with your blog. How is ECE in IIIT Allahabad?

Unknown said...

Hello Sir! You have done a really appreciative work by writing this blog and guiding several students to correct path. Kindly help me as well!
I was interested in CS/IT branch but i could not get it in IIT/DTU/BITS. So I ended up with MPAE(Manufacturing Process and Automation) in NSIT. Later i got a seat in IT branch of IIIT Sonepat, a college which does not has its own campus yet and is running
on the campus of NIT Kurukshetra. Since IIIT Sonepat itself is not an established/reputed college, it would be beneficial to join it only if after 4 years they let me sit in placements of NIT Kurukshetra. Thus, i cant decide whether to leave NSIT MPAE for IT or not.
So, sir, Please tell me your opinion about this issue.
I will be really glad if you help!

Rabindra said...

Sir Your advice is excellent. Great help for students ,&partents. Thanx.

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Abhishek, I can't predict the future. I can't tell you whether NIT Kurukshetra will allow students of IIIT Sonepat in their placement process (and whether companies will accept that). But as I have said repeatedly in my blogs, I wouldn't care about the placement for deciding the place of studies. Just ask yourself which of the two is likely to provide higher quality education.

Unknown said...

IIIT Allahabad? Don't show such attitude towards your arch rival competitors. :) You have directed lots of negativity towards us. Ummm food for thought..

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Anwesh, I don't know where you see negativity. Not on this blog at least. I have made exactly three statements about IIIT Allahabad here. First, it had leadership issues, which have hopefully been resolved after the new Director took over. Second, I would consider IIIT Delhi faculty profile better than faculty profile of IIIT Allahabad. Third, I would consider Faculty profile of IIIT Allahabad to be better than faculty profile of NSIT. I don't know which of these three statements you disagree with.

Unknown said...

@ Dheeraj Sanghi, I agree quality of faculty is the most important factor while choosing an institute however only people who are into this field would know that. A normal 12th std or his/her parents would tend to go by placement records. The only information one could possibly get from an institute's website is educational qualification of the faculty which in my view is not the only criteria for a great teacher. Teaching skills also matter a lot. A professor with PhD may not necessarily be better at teaching compared to a professor with M Tech. Just my 2 cents.

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Unknown, that some PhD faculty may be a worse teacher than some MTech faculty is undisputed. But we are talking about indications of quality. Can you show me a college which has mostly PhD faculty from good universities but is considered a poorer quality institution than another college which has mostly MTech/MCA faculty.

While only someone in the field can make out finer differences in faculty, at broad levels, it should be possible to make out the differences by a 12th class student. A 12th class student interested in engineering would have heard of top engineering colleges in India and abroad. If a college has PhDs only from IITs, IISc, and abroad, versus a college which has very few PhD faculty, this is a no brainer for any one. I have been following several counseling sites and social networking sites for many years, and my understanding is that students are choosing certain colleges over others, despite agreeing that the faculty quality is much better at the other place, but because somehow they have a perception (which is often false) of better placement in one college.

Unknown said...

Sir, the 2 cases mentioned by you as illustration are extreme and one can easily make out which is a better institute. However, in reality, it is not so easy. For example, take Institute A having total 12 faculties (9 PhD + 3 M.Tech), Institute B having total 10 faculties (all PhD) and Institute C having 11 faculties (10 PhD + 1 M.Tech). How would one rate them as per faculty quality? It is also a fact that most institutes list only qualification of faculty (PhD/M.Tech etc.) but the institute from where they have achieved the qualification is not mentioned.

In such a scenario, 12th Class students tend to go by college ratings available on the net and JEE cut off of previous years.

Unknown said...

Sir u helped students like us so much by writing this blog .It's really very helpful. Sir I want to do CSE course but I am confused between IIIT delhi and IIIT hyderabad .so sir plz tell which should I choose over for my CSE course ? I just want to learn this branch from the core

How strong is the CS program at Ashoka University? I want to pursue research in AI. I am working on a crude form of OS and I plan to employ a lot of AI elements like NLP, Computer Vision that makes it stand out of crowd.

Unknown said...

@dheeraj sir, how good it ashoka university in its current state(year 2016) for cs, what are some of the good things about its cs faluclty and cs program, are cs professors liking forward to join it, do they have student exchange programs for cs students and will it be wise to go their if i plan to transfer to a better university abroad the next year?

Unknown said...

Sir, If I ve to make a choice between IMtech in ECE at IIIT Bangalore with CSE at PEC Chandigarh, what would you recommend?

Unknown said...

Sir, Do you recommend 5 year CSE at IIIT Bangalore or 4 year CSE at PEC Chandigarh

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Manish, Among the colleges where there is very little information available on the website, I am not trying to suggest how to compare them. Both are usually bad, so there isn't much to choose from. I can also understand that in some cases, a student may not be able to understand from the website. S/he only needs to ask. If someone wants to make use of information which is grossly misleading, only because that information is available easily, I can't even sympathize with them.

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Hardik, Ashoka University has a very unique program, with most of the electives being in humanities and liberal arts, which I really admire. These are beginning times and one will have to see what kind of faculty they are able to attract to talk in terms of specializations and research.

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Sanjeev, I don't know enough about the two programs to compare them.

Sir, any comments on NSIT, Delhi, or DTU(formerly DCE)? Can you please provide a comparison of the facilities, faculty, ambience, and "system" of these institutes as compared with the old IITs? How should I being an NSITian (IT stream, batch of 2019) organise myself for further growth (like pursuing MS/PHD from MIT/Stanford/Harvard/any Ivy League college), considering the vast difference in habits and thinking I've come across from school life to college?

Further, can you please provide any "DO's and DONT's" during college?

wow!!! hats off to you sir.
you are doing great job.
I just came here searching for my son's college.
I am doctor(physician) & don't understand much of field.
but, as per you, it is the research orientation seems to be more IMP.
My son has no inclination towards any branch but loves maths.
He got 233 in JEE-Mains 2016.
He is not sure about whether to go for pure sciences (IISER/CMI/ISI) or engineering.
If he gets decent rank in JEE adv, should we jump in for any old IIT for any branch?

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Ramamurthi Kumar, Since I am currently at IIIT-Delhi and I have not visited IIIT-Bangalore for a long time, I would not be able to give a fair answer. But here is my take. For MTech program, the research environment is more important. We recently checked the research output of IIIT-Delhi on scopus, and the numbers are higher than most IITs. The number of best paper awards and various other parameters put us among the top in India. I am not a big fan of these numbers, but a lot of people are and to the extent these numbers tell any story, we are at the top. I am sure, being in Bangalore, in the middle of all the IT related action would give certain advantages to IIIT-Bangalore. And like Prof. Jalote in case of IIIT-Delhi, we have another visionary director at IIIT-Bangalore. That helps.

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Manan, I obviously have my bias in favor of IIIT-Delhi.

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Priti, I am not aware of cut-offs for MTech admissions, and in any case there is significant variation from year to year. So please apply and wait.

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Praveen, Let us discuss when you have all the data.

Unknown said...

Dear Sir now that you have joined IIIT Delhi, do you maintain your position with respect to this institution having seen it first hand for over a year now. I ask because I am considering it an option for my son who has qualified JEE mains. The confusion is NSIT Vs IITD. Looking at faculty and course curriculum I am inclined to IITD but many suggest NSIT. My concern is not so much of "package" but the quality of education and grooming the child for a long term carrier in CS.
Shall be grateful for your advice.

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Rajinder Parshad, having spent one year at IIIT-Delhi, I am convinced that we are onto something absolutely wonderful. Recently, Infosys has given a substantial endowment to set up a research center on AI at IIIT-Delhi. This is one of the largest gift by any company in India to an educational institution for research. (I believe it is the second highest, but certainly one of the highest.) You can be sure that a company wouldn't give such a large gift and use its name for a research center (The center is called Infosys Center for AI) unless it is confident that we are a quality institution. When I joined IIIT-Delhi, I knew I was joining a very good place, having visited them numerous number of times, and been on various committees, including Senate. But yet, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the place was even better than what I was assuming.

Unknown said...

Thank you for a prompt response. Would it possible to meet you in person and visit the campus. Shall be grateful if you could spare some time.Regards

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Rajinder Parshad, we are organizing an open house for all potential students and parents on Sunday, May 29th. There will be a presentation between 11 and 12 in the morning, which will include Q&A. But you can stay back after 12 to ask any more questions individually.

Unknown said...

Thanks once again. Where can we get the details of venue etc? Any registration required?

Varun Ramanathan said...

Hello sir, I am a potential student ( or at least I would like to believe so ). I have been fairly enchanted by IIIT Delhi's quality. And I read the previous comment about an open-house for potential students and parents on 29th of May. In case it is not possible for a student to attend the session due to some prior engagement, then is it possible to engage with the faculty, and with you, on any later date, mutually agreed upon?
Thank you :-)

Sirs, My son has got 167 in mains, options in front of me right now is ECE iiit B or ECE in iiit Sri city. Which one is better. If both are not available, we have a chance in NIT trichy and iiit DM kanjeepuram. Can you suggest where to land.As per my understanding I prefer imtech in iiit B and next iiit Sri city, given to mains mark.

Unknown said...

Sir, I have seen the placements of old iiits (eg. iiit jabalpur, iiit gwalior etc) which seem great and much better than a lot of nits, but the cut offs in iiits go down till 20,000s. I am confused whether to go for nits or iiits. Why do the cut offs go so down? Is it due to good quality of education in iiits? What do you think is the reason? Please help sir.

Unknown said...

Now, Dr. Sanghi please stop your bias. You very well know that IIIT Allahabad is the de facto Indian Institute of Information Technology. Have you not read the IIIT Act 2014. So if you profess that one should take admission in new IITs just because they will become good in the long run due to their enjoying the status of being IITs, why double standards with IIIT Allahabad. After this act don't you know that it becomes the best place for Information Technology because it is the MHRD that allocates funds to IITs NITs and IIITs. The IIIT act clearly states in its objective to make the institute foremost in the world in IT and allied areas. So from now on when you profess that one should go to new IITs because eventually it is an institute that will get special recognition and funding vide IIT Act 1961 , try professing the same for IIIT Allahabad. And if you don't that goes to show your bias. Now do not tell me that IIIT is lesser or inferior to IIT . Please read the two acts(IIT Act 1961 and IIIT Act 2014) in juxtaposition. Now as far as faculty is concerned let the board of governors meet, faculty will run to get into the college.

@Varun, you are welcome to our next Open House at IIIT Delhi. We will be announcing the registration soon, most probably on 19th June.

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Prakarsh, I have not looked at all data of all institutes. I would guess that people do look at last year's closing ranks, faculty profile, geographical location, and responses on social media and online counseling sites also, besides looking at placement data, which is almost impossible to verify anyway.

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Baivawa, the only reference to IIIT Allahabad in this blog is: "IIIT Allahabad used to have a serious leadership issue. They now have a new leader (since last one year). I hope things are improving there."

I don't know what is bothering you. If you think that IIIT Allahabad has always had great leadership, let us agree to disagree.

Hello Sir, Can you please tell me which college is better for M.Tech CSE program IIITB or IIITD considering the facts faculties, study environment, placements, future scope of going to higher studies i.e. PhD?

Unknown said...

I agree with you that M.D. Tiwari brought a lot of shame to the college but you very well know about the political appointments (how they are)!!! Now, Dr. Sanghi the limited point i am trying to make is that IIITA did not attract faculty (actually the IT department has started recruiting only after Somenath Biswas assumed directorship) due to that terrifying Director (M.D.Tiwari).But this is only the icing on the cake . Actually IITs and NITs are governed within the broad framework as set by the board of governors. IIITA had as board of governors its own faculty members !!! So, there was a very ugly nexus of the senior professors who actually tried to make the institute their family business. Next is the Amethi factor in which you also had a role to play. Why don't you try to open a campus of IIT Kanpur in the hinterland? You will never agree. So, why did you recommend the same in case of IIITA. Owing to these two factors despite being the hot favorite among new recruits no excellent faculty bothered to apply. Now, after the act once the board of governors is formed everything will fall in place and the senior professors will lose their family business. Sometimes, I think that autonomy tends to corrupt and absolute autonomy corrupts absolutely contrary to what you believe. Also you will be happy to know there will be no Amethi from now onwards. Forgive me for making this a long comment but I need to settle this. Do you actually think that faculty with foreign phd's means better faculty or publishing in IEEE or SCI journals makes a good faculty? All that IIITD has done is to get the foreign phd's to live in a posh area in delhi with good salary. Anybody would join. But should that give you the right to start making a flawed faculty comparison. I mean at IIITA we may not get faculty with foreign phd's as much as you do, but we get recruits for assistant professors(on contract basis !!) who have above 6 years of post phd experience!!!I mean somebody who has been a scientist after phd at drdo, isi, tifr, iitk, barc etc. is better than any recent foreign phd in the field of Information Technology (not computer science). The thing is that the institute is not for doing research in algorithms and complexity theory and blah blah but to do IT related work (robotics, bioinformatics, hci, cyber security etc.). Now coming to algorithms etc. we have as new recruits from colleges such as CMI , IIT Kanpur, etc. so as to be competitive in the core areas. You know all this but the only thing you do on your blogs is to trumpet the colleges with which you have had association with at some point in time.(lnmiit iiitd etc.). I never wanted to be rude to a man of such talent and knowledge but you have left no choice.

sir first of all thanks a lot for such wonderful blogs
I got 278 marks in jee main
95% in cbse board
367 in bitsat
expected rank in advanced-1500-2000
got admission in iisc bangalore via kvpy

Actually i hv never done coding and dont think cse interests me.i am interested in physics but of applied and innovative nature as in mechanical and electronics. With this rank I'll be probably getting chemical/civil in iit delhi/mumbai.i don't like these but i really wanna study at one of these iits . I am thinking to join these and try my best for branch change . I'll be quite happy even with mechanical in any of these iits . Actually i didn't perform to my potential in adv.i expected a lot better according to my performance in aits etc. plz advice me if i can safely take the risk of branch change at one of these iits.

i am not able to decide whether to go for research in iisc which seems quite a struggling life as compared to iits and also there is the money factor.

plz advice me what to do

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Vipul, you want to study Physics, but applied. And you want to study in either IITD or IITB only. It is obvious that you should go for Engineering Physics program. You should be able to get it at IITD with your rank. This meets every single criteria you have listed.

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Harbhla, Prof. Barua is a great leader and leadership really matters in smaller places. Go for IIIT Guwahati.

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Baivawa, I can at best be accused of keeping silent about IIIT-A. You are the one who is writing negative things about IIIT-A in your comments. You are saying:
1. Prof. Tiwari who was Director from inception till 2 years ago brought a lot of shame to the Institute.
2. That faculty members did not join IIIT-A due to that, and recruitments have happened only after Prof. Biswas joined.
3. There was nexus between Director and Board, and IIIT-A did not even attract good faculty.
4. Even now, IIIT-A does not attract faculty members from good universities in the world.

But after Prof. Biswas has joined as Director, IIIT-Allahabad is likely to have a bright future, and hence I should have explicitly mentioned it in my blog.

These are your statements not mine. I too have hopes for the bright future of IIIT-Allahabad. But there is doubt whether Prof. Biswas will last his 5-year term at IIIT Allahabad.

Unknown said...

I have not mentioned any negative things about IIITA but the truth and everybody knew that(don't you know that the courts asked Tiwari to step down). And do not force me to educate your crowd about the politics that have taken place at IITs(including IIT Kanpur). So do not try to run with the hare and hunt with the hound. And prof. Biswas will last his 5 year term there is no doubt about that because now the governance structure will change. I mean how are you so ignorant. Once you have a board of governors in which you have only two professors from the institute and rest being other members(including compulsorily a director of an IIT and an IIM which is a novel approach and a good one) there is no way there will be arbitrariness whether Biswas stays or somebody comes in his place. Now as far as good faculty is concerned I have to admit that foreign phd's have come only after Biswas . And I bet that they have a profile which i think only the best institute can attract. So, all that i am telling you dear great professor Sanghi stop your IIITD Puran. If Pankaj Jalote can manage to attract good profiles in six years imagine what would happen if Somenath Biswas would do in 5 years. This is because IIITA has better recognition and opportunities than your institute (even IIITH). So, please also dwell upon such things and write a more balanced answer rather than harping on leadership crisis. RIP.

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@harbhla, IIIT Guwahaty is my preference. But please understand that I do not know of all programs at all colleges. I am making this suggestion based on a view of their website, faculty listing and most importantly, Prof. Gautam Barua becoming the Director there.

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Praveen, I think your son will have to make up his mind first whether he loves CS very much, in which case he should look at CS or similar programs only. If he can't get them at IITB, consider other places. He can get it at IIT Hyderabad, just to give an example. Alternately, if he has only a slight love for CS, and geography is more important, then IIT Bombay is an obvious choice. And if there is no specific branch that he is interested in, let him take up a somewhat less competitive branch where he has a greater chance of doing better than other students. So no EE and ME at least. And take up a 4-year program and not a 5-year program. When you don't know your passion, committing to do a Master's thesis is not a great idea.

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Sanjay Agarwal, Very difficult to compare so many different programs at different IITs. If you are looking for life skills, you may even consider Ashoka University.

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@lawliet, I believe that we are comparable to IIIT-Hyderabad and new IITs (and why new IITs only, even old IITs) in some ways. But I am not comfortable with the idea of a linear ranking. All good institutions have their own individual strengths and therefore they are better for some students and not so good for another set of students.

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@sumeet, I don't know enough about IIIT Bangalore to compare. But why not consider BTech in Goa and do an MTech from an IIT. Will take an extra year, but you can get a degree from an IIT.

Unknown said...

Sir,
Whether one should do M.Tech in CSE after having 3-3.5 years of work experience in IT industry as many of the people prefer MBA or so?

People prefer MS from foreign universities and rather post graduation from foreign universities.

Vijay said...

Sir ,
I want to join either of the two branches : dtu mce or iiitd csam since i am very much interested in computers as well as finance. But at this stage i am unable to prioritise between computers or finance. Dtu mce is more maths oriented. Since i want to explore myself in college through co- curriculars i am not preferring iiitd as it is academic oriented and much of the campus(including sports area) is under construction which may take upto 2 years for completion. Whereas at dtu, the seats have again been increased which leads to excessive competition during placements(total number of students graduating are huge). The less no of students at iiitd can be both a plus and a minus point(less interaction, less exposure, less people in societies which are already small). Another factor is the fact that csam is a new branch, therefore uncertainty in terms of placement and future prospects. At last I am confused , since iiitd sounds promising in the coming years in terms of brand value .Since i am uncertain about my intrests , the academic workload at iiit is keeping me from joining iiitd which would hinder my exploration through co curriculars. I know you would recommend iiitd over dtu anytime. What are the things that each of the college lack with respect to each other as of now and after 4 years? And what solution woukd you suggest as per what i have mentioned above ?
Thanks in adavnce.

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Ashish, if you are interested in a technical career, you should do an MTech. If you are interested in shifting to management, you should do an MBA. Studying abroad exposes you to many new ideas and broadens your horizons. So I would suggest that if you can afford it or are having a scholarship, then go abroad even to a place which is slightly poor in academics compared to what you could be getting in India. But if the quality of institution abroad is very bad compared to what you can get in India, then stay in India.

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Akhil, Anyone believes that a 40-50 hours per week of effort in academics for just 8 months in a year is too much hard work, I would be happy to advice them not to join IIIT-Delhi. An individual has about 14 hours a day for doing whatever they want besides sleeping, getting ready, eating food and other essential activities. That means you have about 100 hours a week at your disposal for 52 weeks in a year, or say around 5000 hours. In your 11th and 12th class, you would have used at least 3500 of these hours for studies. IIIT-Delhi is only asking that you allocate about 1400 hours of this time for academic work, including lectures, labs, assignments, exams, and everything else. We believe that it leaves a huge amount of time with you for all your interests and extra-curricular. But as I said, if this is too much work, thankfully, you have other options. Rest are all minor points. The construction of most buildings will be over by summer 2017. Even if there is a delay of a few months, at least all the grounds will be recovered since only interior work will remain. So it is one year issue and not two years. I really don't want to compare DTU with IIIT-Delhi. I can talk about IIITD only, and let someone from DTU talk about DTU. In any case, the issue is largely of perceptions, which a few lines on this forum are unlikely to change.

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Sunil, I have not really looked at colleges from the point of view of MTech. For BTech, one has to see the quality of faculty, which would include things like what is their pedigree and whether they are doing a minimal amount of research to keep them current. For MTech, one has to go beyond that and see whether they are currently doing good research, and whether they will be able to supervise a research project culminating in a thesis.

@Prateik, Same comment as above.

@Rituparna, pretty much all IITs and other top institutions will allow a direct admission to PhD after BTech.

Check out the faculty pages of the two departments. And look for two things. One, what is the background of these faculty members - whether they are PhDs, where did they do their PhD, are they currently active in research, etc. And two, what is the student to faculty ratio not counting those who are on hourly wages (actually you can include them also). I am not even mentioning the campus and the infrastructure.

Sir.. I can somehow manage the funds for child education. But dont u think B.sc comp sc and B.tech comp sc will make a difference.. Regards

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Deepak, The 3-year program will have less content than a 4-year program. And there will be some government places (including MTech admissions) where they will demand BTech. I don't know if Ashoka is planning to address the issue of a 4-year degree. But even if they don't I think a CS + liberal arts combination from a place like Ashoka would be fantastic learning, and I really don't think that there will be a problem of job at the end of such an education.

There have been some discussions recently about IIIT Allahabad in the comments. I had mentioned that Prof. Biswas may not last 5 years at IIIT Allahabad. Prof. Biswas has now gone back to IIT Kanpur, and Prof. G C Nandi has been given charge of Director, IIIT Allahabad. I wish Prof. Nandi all the best, and I hope that a new Director would be appointed soon. I had lots of hope from Prof. Biswas, but he decided to quit. It is sad that IIIT Allahabad has to go through leadership issues right from the day it was set up.

Vaibhav Singh said...

And, I am happy to inform that Dr. Sanghi no longer needs to feel sad about IIIT Allahabad not having a full time director as P Nagbhushan of Mysore University has been appointed as the new Director. Dr. Biswas probably resigned because he was summoned by the Allahabad Court in a matter of contempt of court. I do not undeerstand why he did not comply with the court order. I also see some hidden hand of the government in his resignation. But all is well now. The new director is an academician and has published very high quality papers in the area of Pattern Recognition in reputed international journals like Pattern Recognition Letters and the no. of such papers is also significant. He is also a better administrator than Prof. Biswas as he was more interested in teaching TOC to us than addressing the administrative issues which he entrusted to DR. Nandi. What is amusing to me is ,that I have come to learn that(subject to correction) IIITD director Pankaj Jalote had applied for the post of Director,IIIT Allhabad and he was not selected. This I have come to learn from reliable sources namely a professor at the institute. I would like to know your views about this as on paper Dr. Jalote's profile looks better and he is also popular with the industry and academia in the north. I hope that at least now this leadership crisis issue is laid to rest once for all.

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Vinayak, Good education is useful to the student throughout his/her life. Whether this will help in preparing sociology in UPSC exam, I don't know. We have people graduating with CSE passing UPSC exam when they had not studied any subject of UPSC in any detail in their BTech. And it is difficult to predict how students will earn in the next 50 years, and whether that earning has any correlation with the discipline.

sir I need your help.
here are my scores:

cbse 2017: 81%
mathematics: 75/100
jee main 2017:120/360
jee advanced: 94/366 while cutoff was 128/366

I am dropping for jee 2018
eligibility for jee main and advanced is 75% which I satisfy.
eligibility for bitsat is 75% in p+c+m which I satisy.

but eligibility for IIIT-D is 80% in boards and 80% in mathematics which I do do not satisfy.

I am confident of scoring 200/360 in jee main 2018 which corresponds to 10000 air.
at this rank csam and ece are available at IIIT-D

so these are my doubts:

1. If I give cbse improvement in only mathematics and score greater than 80 then am I
eligible for IIIT-D?

2. What do you advise me in my situation?

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Sahil, you should not depend on one institute if you are repeating. Till last year, CBSE insisted that you repeat all subjects or none. This year, people did repeat just one subject. I am no longer with IIITD, but I think there is one student who has just repeated Maths and the new marks have been accepted as satisfying eligibility. But rules can change any time. If your Maths marks in CBSE are affecting your admission in many institutions, or can have any future problems, then repeat Maths. If it is only IIITD, I would not think of repeating the Maths exam.

hello
I know you must be irritated with mails from parents and student during these days. I was one of them last year. My son got AIR 537 last yr and took B tech mech eng at IIT-B ( as you say-your rank decides your branch). I was insisting on aerospace as you suggested, but he decided otherwise. Now, he is changing to aero space as he found mechanical little uncomfortable. He also plans minors in maths.I being Dr, not oriented with all these, is little worried about his choice of minor. I was suggesting minors in CS.But he plans maths. What is your opinion? is it worth? He is taking maths just for sake of his pure interest in maths. Kindly give your thoughts on this.

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

Let him study what he enjoys. It is just 4 courses. Don't worry about such small decisions. And of course Maths is very important for both engineering and computing.

Unknown said...

Hello sir! I am posting here since I am confused between two colleges and both of them happen to come in the list of your preferred colleges that you have given above, and I thought you would be able to give me suitable advice. One is Computer Science and Design at IIIT Delhi(I have always been a creative person, but my area of interest as a favourite past time is mainly fine arts, so maybe that is why this course appeals to me), and the other is Biological Sciences Dual Degree at BITS Pilani, Pilani campus( I find Biology quite interesting as a subject too).
Sir, I have been thinking about the many different factors that should help me find out which one is more cut for me, but I just cannot. I knowledge about Computer Science is negligible at the moment, since I did not opt for CS in 11th and 12th, but I am ready to take it up and excel in it, if need be.
One other point that seems to be important for me is that I want to do participate in extra-curricular activities as well, through out my college years.
Can you give me your perspective about it?
Thankyou so much!

Unknown said...

Sir, which among IIT Jammu, BITS-Goa, and IIIT-D is recommended by you for CSE

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Anushka, because of my close association with IIIT-Delhi, I know more about them, even though I make frequent trips to different BITS campuses. Not knowing CS is not an issue from the point of view of background needed for the CSD course. Most students that come to various CS/IT programs have not done any programming in schools. This means that we don't know if these students will like CS enough to do ok, or will develop passion for CS and perform excellently, or will hate CS and want to get out. But statistically speaking, most people will like enough to pass, and IIIT-Delhi faculty is arguably the best to inculcate an interest in CS. In case of BITS, I guess the second major will be decided after one year, based on your performance in the first year.

As far as extra-curricular activities are involved, I am sure a larger campus of BITS Pilani and with no distraction from anything in the town, you would have more options at Pilani than at IIIT-Delhi. But the city of Delhi would provide you additional options to follow your interests. In any case, the amount of time that you would have for the extra-curricular would be roughly the same. Both institutes will expect you to work hard on your academics.

I can't compare the two programs per se, since they are as different from each other as any two programs can be. Can only comment on issues that you think are important. Finally, you will have to take a call.

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Piyush, For CSE, I have no doubt that the program at IIIT-Delhi is excellent.

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Emerald, 19000 rank and 6 bonus marks should get you ECE at IIITD. Of course, that is just a guess based on last year's data, and this year could be different. Better in what respect? I think the quality of faculty is very strong at IIIT Delhi, and when I look for an institute, that is the primary thing that I look for. But others may look for large campus, diversified programs, etc. So take your own decision.

Hello,

My AIR in JEE Advanced is 6913(CRL). And, I screwed my JEE Main.
I want only Computer Science. I have interviewed at Ashoka University and applied at JIIT. Please guide me on this.
Thank You
Regards,
Vedansh

@Vedansh, Ashoka, of course. You could also try to get some program in some IIT (not CS).

Thank you, sir.
To be true sir, I am not really interested in any other branch. I explored, whatever was possible for me, in this field and I found out that this branch fascinates me(I am competitive programmer also).
Would you advise for JIIT, in case Ashoka rejects me(very less chance as my interview went well)?
Again, Thank you, sir.

Hello sir,
I thank you very much for such wonderful articles providing the necessary information required by students to take an informed decision. I really appreciate the efforts you put in to guide studnets like me.
I appeared for Jee this year, and having become convinced about the superiority of IIITs, I am again faced with the dillema of choosing between IIIT B and IIIT D. Could you please guide me in this regard? I have read your previous comments regarding this, however, thatst from at leadt 3 year old posts. So, could you provide any new insights sir?

Sir, my son has got AIR 584 in JEE Mains and AIR 1331 in JEE Advanced. Presently, he has two options in his hand (1) Computer Science at IIIT Hyderabad and (2) Mechanical Engg at IIT Kanpur. On one side he is getting CS, in an institute, which is having great faculty and have very good placement record. On other side, he is getting brand name of IIT Kanpur with great faculty and possibilities of all round development there, but the branch is Mechanical, where the placements are not that much good as in CS.

He doesn't has interest for a specific branch.

Could you please guide us, which course / institute would be better for him in the long run.

Pls reply soon.my mains 2018 rank is 7563.i have got a seat in iiit Bangalore imtech cse.but it has high fee.so,I am planning to go to iiit allahabad imtech if possible.is it a good decision to go to iiit allahabad or is iiit Bangalore better inspite of high fee?in iiit allahabad which specializations are good to join leaving iiit Bangalore?

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Unknown/Sandeep Singhal, I am afraid I can't answer, since I am not sure what your son's definition of "better" is, what will make him happier in the short as well as long term.

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Suchith Kumar, Institutes can't be better or worse because of fee. One has to consider whether one can afford a particular program or not. I wouldn't suggest that you sell off family jewels to support yourself in IIIT Bangalore. The difference between the two is not worth that much risk and stress. But how much financial stress you and your family can withstand for five years is a call that I do not know how to take.

@Dheeraj Sanghi, I got AIR 3306 in GATE 2019. Can you suggest me in which colleges I can get an andmission for CSE?

Dheeraj Sanghi said...

@Sharad Sharma, while the list is primarily for UG programs, and I hardly know the cutoffs for MTech admission, I would suggest you try IIIT Delhi and IIIT Hyderabad.

Dear sir,
(Other people here for UG related comments may ignore this...)
I've gone through many of your blogs especially related to cs/it education, mtech etc. and felt you are the right person for helping me choose.
I'm a chemical engineering graduate, who is interested in pursuing research in AI/ML. I've appeared for GATE CS 2021 and has a score of 688.
I've am offer from IIITH, and awaiting results of ISI Kolkata (both MTech CS), I'm seeing M.Tech course as the first step towards my goal. Please help me judge which of these programs would be the right fit given my undergrad background.
Thank you.

@Unknown, I really do not know ISI enough. But my guess is that the flavor of the two programs would be different. You need to talk to folks in the two departments to understand the difference. From quality perspective, both are fine institutions.
